Acting questions answered

Acting questions answered

Because I've been acting for over 30 years, I get asked a lot of questions about the industry and how it works. I'm asked how to get jobs, how to handle working with A-listers, when and how to get an agent, or join the union, or move to L.A., etc.

Because I coach actors, writers and filmmakers, I get asked about the creative process, overcoming obstacles, staying inspired, and creating your own employment.

And because I've worked with some of our industry's best, I'm asked what it's like to work with (most frequently) Quentin Tarantino and Leonardo DiCaprio.

I recently did a couple of podcasts where I answered these questions and many more.

So You Want Fame? Bring Comfortable Shoes

This was my second time being interviewed by the Papamutes Podcast and once again – I found the True or False portion at the end most challenging. On this episode, we discussed (in order):

  • the impact of AI
  • movies I just worked on
  • the evolution of the industry and producing
  • Rob Reiner (who had died just before the interview)
  • financial realities for actors
  • how my acting book evolved with the industry to now include self-taping, workplace harassment procedures, and the importance of signing conventions
  • my 5-book mystery series and my upcoming 2-book reincarnation adventure series
  • dancing with the Pussyfooters in Mardi Gras parades and the difficult journey of loving the Saints (NFL) and Pelicans (NBA)

"From Django Unchained memories to a fresh indie streak, Laura drops blunt truths: this isn’t a get-rich-quick career, but the work can change your life."

Anna Iris and I had a fairly intense conversation about feeling called to acting and risking everything for a dream with almost no odds of success. "In this episode, [Laura] shares how she walked away from Plan A, committed to a 1% chance of making it, built a decades-long career, faced depression and burnout, and ultimately redefined success around happiness rather than fame or status."

We discussed (in order):

  • why and how I became an actor
  • how I approach coaching
  • the most common block to success
  • dealing with competition
  • being the inspiration for a role written by Quentin Tarantino
  • what makes "the greats" so great
  • working with Leonardo DiCaprio
  • dealing with ego and vanity - separating self-worth from appearance
  • how I define success and why I choose happiness over chasing fame
  • being a Pussyfooter dancer in the parades
  • mental health issues, burn-out and self-care

I'm a Pussyfooter!

I almost always mention dancing with the Pussyfooters when I give interviews, but sometimes I get to do an interview AS a Pussyfooter. The event has passed but here's a clip of a few of us promoting our annual Blush Ball raising funds for those affected by domestic violence.
