New Orleans Easter parades
New Orleans hosts at least 3 parades Easter Sunday. We missed the traditional Historic French Quarter Easter Parade (Est. 1956) and arrived for the more lively French Quarter Easter Parade AKA Chris Owens Easter Parade. Originated by the eponymous late burlesque queen in 1985 – float riders wear fabulous hats and throw toys, beads, bunny ears, and treat-filled plastic eggs.

Walking and dance krewes included the blonde-wigged Krewe of Dolly, the Krewe of Rolling Elvi, Muff-A-Lottas, and the NOLA Angels.

Many of us were excited to see the debut of The Strolling Nobles strutting the route. Wish I had video of their moves.

Between parades, we walked the French Quarter enjoying everyone's festive hats, bonnets, fascinators, and headpieces on our way to a fabulous seafood brunch.

The Gay Easter Parade features drag queens, the Big Easy Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and other visual delights. This was their 25th year parading!

Walking krewes included the Chaissez Ladies and Queer Eye for the Sci-fi.

As well as the Krewe of Goddesses and Merry Antoinettes.

The Gay Easter Parade also has throws but they tend to be more personal, sometimes even handmade.

One of my favorite things about parades is seeing friends along the route or in the procession. It was great seeing husbands Bryan Batt and Tom Cianfichi, Django Unchained carriage driver, William Pickett, and extraordinary violinist Tanya Huang.

Parade season is slowing down but I was very aware this year of how colorful and celebratory life is here. We are truly blessed to live in this marvelous city.
